Some windows overlook an attractive outdoor space. Others are less of a desirable feature. They are inconveniently positioned and can compromise the privacy of your home interiors.
It’s possible to solve this problem with little more than a roll of static cling window film. This is a simple, effective and decorative home improvement product, designed to compliment your home’s interior aesthetic.
What you need to attach static cling window film:
- Scissors
- A sharp knife
- The window film itself
- Tape measure
- Water spray bottle
- Clean cloth
The process is also suitably simple, comprising the following few basic steps:
Step 1 – Clean the window surface
Firstly, give the window a thorough clean. Use an appropriate vinegar or alcohol-based cleaning product and allow plenty of time to dry before continuing.
Step 3 – Measure and mark the static cling film
Measure the pane of glass as accurately as possible. Then using the backing-paper grid as a guide, mark the measurements of the window on to the film. Be as careful to keep your guide lines straight and accurate.
Step 4 – Cut out the static film
Begin the process of cutting out the film, ensuring you cut it approximately 2mm smaller than the actual size of the window.
Step 5 – Moisten the window surface
Take a spray bottle with some filtered or boiled and cooled water and lightly mist the surface of the window. It should be lightly moist, but not too wet.
Step 6 – Apply the film
The final step is to carefully remove the backing paper and even more carefully positioned the window film in place. Smooth out any bubbles or unevenness, before drying with a clean cloth. The film will be set within a couple of hours and it’s job done.
What are the benefits of static cling window films?
Static cling window film is used primarily for privacy reasons. It can be a great way of preventing outsiders from seeing into your home, without compromising the flow of natural light.
It can also be a useful tool for providing additional UV protection and keeping the home cooler during the summer. If you have one or more windows that attract a lot of direct sunlight during the warmer months of the year, static cling window film can help filter a certain amount of this glare.
What kind of adhesive is needed to attach window film?
Static cling window film is designed to adhere itself to almost any smooth and shiny surface. The static side of the film creates a strong and secure bond with the window, with no specific adhesive required.
Using a small amount of water will enable you to slide the film into position. If you’re not happy with the positioning and need to adjust it, you can do so easily without leaving any marks on the window.
Can I change my mind after applying static cling window film?
Most types of quality static cling window film can be removed in seconds without leaving any residue behind. The film can be moved or reused elsewhere, using clean water to fix them securely.
High-quality static cling window film is durable enough to be used and reused multiple times, representing excellent value for money.
Can I clean window cling film?
Yes. Although it is recommended to only use a damp cloth with clean water, as opposed to conventional window cleaning products. Consult the manufacturer’s guidelines before going ahead.
